1.    Why are flat roofs common on larger commercial buildings?

 

Flat roofs are the most cost efficient and they can be used for multiple purposes including solar panels or green roofs.

 

2.    Why are the standard pitched roof treatments not acceptable for a low-slope roof?

 

The treatments for pitched roofs depend on the slope of the surface for proper weatherproofing.  Shingles, for example overlap and allow the water to slide off of them.  Flat roofs do not provide enough slope for a finish such as overlapping shingles to function properly.

 

3.    Why are the typical low-slope roof surfaces not appropriate when public access is planned?

 

Tar surfaces can be a mess, especially in hot weather.  They are also often covered with gravel, which is not the most appropriate surface for pedestrian use.  The standard low-slope roof surfaces would probably not be very durable against continued pedestrian use, either.

 

4.     What factors are important to consider when designing a green roof?

 

It is important to consider both the high initial costs and the future maintenance costs/labor that the green roof will require.

 

5.    What advantages do green roofs provide over standard low-slope roof treatments?

 

Green roofs provide a more usable space for people and are more visually appealing.  They are also better for the environment because they use fewer man made materials, still produce oxygen, and filter out pollutants.  They also have high insulating values which results in lower climate control costs.
